Durning the 70's, a huge influx of Azoreans, almost all from Sao Miguel, completely inundated our city. Living here and not speaking Portuguese or being of Portuguese descent makes you a social pariah, since almost everyone here is Portuguese. Every shop, bakery and restaurant is bilingual at least. Being non lusofone puts you in the minority.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Thursday, 16 July 2009","votes":0,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-odd ccomment-comment "},{"id":680,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"Renata","comment":"Robbi, that would be almost funny if it were not misleading.

\nOne of the US census questions has always been country of birth. A glance at the US census as far back as 1880 or 1900 clearly shows that there have been a large number of Portuguese -- particularly from the Azores -- in Fall River and surrounding towns for several generations. Massachusetts state history books concur. There have been large numbers of Azoreans in Fall River for generations.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Saturday, 29 August 2009","votes":5,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-even ccomment-comment "},{"id":726,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"Erika Pimental","comment":"I come from a little town called Tiverton, Rhode Island bordering Fall River and also from one of those Sao Miguel families. I am the first to begin (though I've hardly begun) researching our families origins. I am just beginning to learn portuguese and hope to be conversational by the time I visit Sao Miguel to find my roots. Thanks for all the tips!","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Sunday, 03 January 2010","votes":3,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-odd ccomment-comment "},{"id":763,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"Sibel","comment":"Thanks for the great site !
\nl took Spanish classes for some time and except for the pronounciation the 2 languages seem so similar.l find it very useful to follow Fado lyrics as l listen to the songs.lt really helps to understand the pronounciation.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Wednesday, 24 March 2010","votes":1,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-even ccomment-comment "},{"id":859,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"George","comment":"I love this site! I've been trying to learn how to speak portuguese because my ancestors were portuguese from the Azore islands, and I love that part of my background. My last name is George and I am always trying to find new information on my ancestors, whose last name would have also been George (or a portuguese form of George).","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Thursday, 27 January 2011","votes":1,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-odd ccomment-comment "},{"id":958,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"K. \nI also found this website very interesting. I am always interested in learning more about my portuguese back round, and the Azore islands are a large part of that, and I have also been working on learning how to speak portuguese\u2013it's a beautiful language.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Wednesday, 21 September 2011","votes":2,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-even ccomment-comment "},{"id":1027,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"Debi","comment":"I have visited Terceira Island in the Azores twice. I am learning Portuguese so I may return and not be dependent on someone who is bi-lingual. The island is beautiful and I have also gone to St. Jorge which is just as beautiful. I find speaking Portuguese difficult but after falling in love with Terceira, I will keep trying. After my second visit, my mother found that that one of our ancestors had a least lived there for a short time. In the 1800s, last name Enos. On St. Jorge I saw many cemetery plots with that last name..so I want to return and find out if I have any other ancestors that were there.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Monday, 04 June 2012","votes":2,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-odd ccomment-comment "},{"id":1054,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"angey","comment":"thanks so much for this site! it's the best one i've come across, certainly the best free one. portuguese (as it's spoken) is a very difficult language for me because i have six years of spanish under my belt, so although portuguese is quite easy for me to read, it sounds absolutely nothing like spanish so when it's spoken i can understand very little! i am mostly of portuguese (mainland as well as acores) descent and we are planning a visit, so i decided it was time to learn the language. your site is awesome, thanks again. very helpful!!","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Tuesday, 15 January 2013","votes":0,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-even ccomment-comment "},{"id":1408,"parentid":-1,"children":[],"level":0,"name":"Maryann Silva","comment":"Great descriptions! I am of both French and Azorean ancestry. I speak French so I hope learning Portuguese will be fairly easy. I also know Spanish and Italian. There are plenty of Azoreans in California so I'll seek help with local groups. Obrigado.","commentModerator":false,"avatar":"","date":"Friday, 03 March 2023","votes":0,"published":1,"class":"ccomment-even ccomment-comment "}]}
